The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined direction.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our fans.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After a period of talks, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.
His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The choice is up to you."
The game does not have an official release date or platforms, but fans can anticipate more updates as creation progresses.
