‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Light therapy is clearly enjoying a moment. There are now available light-emitting tools for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines along with muscle pain and gum disease, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device outfitted with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a significant discovery for domestic dental hygiene.” Worldwide, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, stimulating skin elasticity, soothing sore muscles, relieving inflammation and persistent medical issues while protecting against dementia.

The Science and Skepticism

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” notes a Durham University professor, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, too, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Sunlight-imitating lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Different Light Modalities

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In rigorous scientific studies, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to high-energy gamma radiation. Phototherapy, or light therapy utilizes intermediate light frequencies, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and infrared light visible through night vision technology.

UVB radiation effects, including sunburn or skin darkening, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – meaning smaller wavelengths – which minimises the risks. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, meaning intensity is regulated,” says Ho. And crucially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – different from beauty salons, where regulations may be lax, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps

Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, enhance blood flow, oxygen absorption and cell renewal in the skin, and activate collagen formation – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Studies are available,” states the dermatologist. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, the risk-benefit ratio. Numerous concerns persist.”

Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives

Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, bacteria linked to pimples. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he mentions, though when purchasing home devices, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

Simultaneously, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he states. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that results appear unrealistic. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, but over 20 years ago, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he explains. “I remained doubtful. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that nobody believed did anything biological.”

What it did have going for it, however, was that it travelled through water easily, enabling deeper tissue penetration.

Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support

More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” notes the researcher, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In low doses this substance, explains the expert, “triggers guardian proteins that maintain organelle health, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and pro-autophagy – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
