In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
